Be prepared to see a lot of humming power lines and a lot of empty white space, and that unforgettable ghostly red glow in all the shadows. If I had to characterize the art with a single word, I'd say minimalism. The sound and animation play into the structure beautifully.
GAME SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN OP SERIES
Some viewers may find this sort of thing frustrating, or may feel that the series is progressing "slowly" because almost nothing is resolved as you go along. As the layers are peeled off, they become obsolete or superficial in relation to what's underneath. Don't expect past events to be resolved or secrets demystified. The episodes of Lain are called layers for good reason: they're like peeling off layers of meaning as you try to find something at the core. In terms of structure, art, and composition, Lain is perhaps the most masterful anime I've seen. Little did I know what I was getting myself into. I didn't get into it looking for something deep or philosophical I just thought it was cool to see such a culturally accurate portrayal of cyberspace taking place in anime. I must admit, what first caught my interest in Lain was the whole computer culture aspect of it: hardware enhancements, cooling systems, MMORPGs and PKs, online existence, and so on. What I want to do here is tell how I've found the series masterful in its composition, personally moving, and impactful in a lasting sort of way that only the best of anime can rival. Readers hungry for that sort of thing can browse the many websites already dedicated to the subject, the best of which is probably Lawrence Eng's Thought Experiments Lain. Lain's one of those series which, like Evangelion, has been analyzed to death, so I'll try my best not to analyze with this review, even though it's very tempting. Cyberspace and religion and prophecy and deities and aliens and psi - oh my!
